Rasmuson Foundation 2020 Fellowship keeps me positive
2020 began full of plans in my studio. Like for everyone, that all changed.
The events I thought I had arranged were mostly cancelled due to the coronavirus, and those that weren't cancelled were indefinitely postponed. I pretty much lost all my motivation. Then came the biggest surprise. I got a call from the Rasmuson Foundation telling me I have been awarded a 2020 Fellowship! That news came just a few days after my father passed on. It has been a year like no other. My father was 91. I would have loved to get to tell him about the award, but instead I found myself spending most of the summer with my sisters at his house on the east coast, closing the chapter that was his life. The photo at the top is the remains of a sculpture in his back yard. I made it during my last year of college, shortly after my mother had passed in 1984. My sisters and I unearthed, excavated, shared, saved and let go of a lot over those weeks together. We talked so much about what made us who we are. It was a rich exchange.
