Stacked Extension

  • Valdez Museum 217 Egan Drive Valdez, Alaska United States (map)

Stacked Extension opens at the Valdez Museum September 26th, 5:30-7pm. Cynthia’s current abstract sculpture explores the tenderness of her maternal lineage and ways of perceiving what are feminine strengths. As a human, her experience of her flesh, blood, bones and emotions is what she knows best. Her skeletal structure forms the basis of inquiry that she works from. She is a constant observer of natural processes of formation and decay as dynamic extensions through time: lineage of a family through passing generations, ringed growth in a tree or onion, wrackline accumulation with each tide, erosion and rapidly receding glaciation. A beholder yet part of that entirety, she relies on the wellbeing of these life processes for sustenance and inspiration. References to those themes appear, often surprising her as she works. In her art making and daily life, she chooses to tend, care for and look after, as a way to shine light on tender care as our source of vitality.
